5 Reasons Youre Miserable at Work and What to Do about It - Kathy Caprino
5 Reasons Youâre Miserable at Work and What to Do about It Last week, I held a free teleclass for women on the â5 Reasons Youâre Miserable at Work and What To Do About It,â based on key findings from my national research with scores of working women across the country and my book Breakdown, Breakthrough. More than 90 women signed up for the call, and they confirmed yet again what so many women have been unable able to say out loud until now, which is, âIâm unhappy at work, but Iâm not sure exactly why or what to do about it!â Whether you are a corporate professional, self-employed or in transition, if you need to find a different way to work, donât worry. Help is on the way! And youâre definitely not alone. Below are what Iâve found to be the top five reasons so many women are dissatisfied and unfulfilled at work, along with concrete tips to revise your situation and change course today. The top 5 reasons many women are miserable at work are â" They find it impossible to balance work and family They suffer from chronic financial distress They struggle using skills and talents that arenât ânaturalâ to them They feel chronically undervalued and disrespected They experience little joy or positive meaning in their work If the above describes your experience, here are some tips to help you create an internal shift away from feeling trapped and disempowered, to feeling more confident, courageous and committed to making positive career change today (and feel free to write me at kathy@kathycaprino.com if youd like a download of the recording of the call). Tips for Positive Career Change: 1) Gain More Work-Life Balance Balance is not going to just fall in your lap. You have to claim it, and commit to getting it. How? First, determine the three most important priorities you are committed to achieving in your personal and in your professional life. What are the three things that are vital to you to bring about that matter more than anything else? Formulate these in terms of âto beâ statements such as âto be a loving mother or âto be a successful entrepreneurâ or âto be a helper of others.â Uncover the three top achievements that you are longing to bring about in your life and work and that you will not compromise on. Then commit yourself to these. Discover where you are over-functioning (doing more than is necessary, more than is healthy, and more than is appropriate) in your life, your family, and work, and let go of doing too much and being perfect in the areas that donât matter as much to you. Once you take these steps, youâll find that balance comes more easily to you, because you are being guided each day by the knowledge of what you want to create, and knowing you are 1000% committed to doing it. 2) Get Healthy with Your Money To get out of chronic financial distress, you must become intimately connected with your money and begin to recognize your real intrinsic worth. First, create a solid budget with strong financial goals, and stick to it. Examine your spending â" are you buying things in order to soothe your soul? If so, stop over-spending. Look at your beliefs around money that you learned as a child from living with your family. Are your beliefs about money positive or negative, expansive or constricting? Do you believe you deserve wealth and abundance, or are you ashamed of the money you have or donât have? Overall, the key to overcoming chronic financial distress is to heal your relationship with money through positive and healthy beliefs, actions, and choices. Once you create a supportive money relationship, you will no longer stay in jobs that create financial distress or drain you of joy and energy. Youâll know your worth, and begin claiming it, on your professional path and otherwise. 3) Use Skills that Are Fun and Natural Itâs vitally important to understand exactly what talents and skills are easy and fun for you to use, and then find a way (either in your existing job or in a new field or job) to tap these talents more frequently at work. To get more in touch with what you love to do and what comes easily, take my free Career Path Assessment. Figure out what you want to do more of, less of, and never again! Often, what you love to do and what comes easily to you were apparent in your childhood, so start there. What did you thoroughly enjoy as a kid that people noticed, admired and praised? You might also realize in doing this exercise that just because youâre great at a task or endeavor at work doesnât mean you like to do it! The key to an easier and happier work-life is to use talents that come naturally and are fun to you, so that each day feels like a joy, not a struggle. 4) Claim Your Self-Respect If youâre chronically undervalued or mistreated at work and want people to change their treatment of you, you must start with SELF-respect. How do you gain self-respect? Through courageous action that inspires your own self-esteem â" action that you know you should be taking, but havenât found the nerve to take. Nowâs the time to become more authentic and real in your work. Speak up about who you are and whatâs important to you. Make yourself right, not wrong. If you know something needs to be communicated, figure out a way to do it as soon as possible. Find an advocate or mentor at work to help you speak up in the right way so that you will be heard and respected for your viewpoint. Start enforcing your boundaries so that you know exactly what you will tolerate and accept from others, and what you wonât. 5) Find Work that Gives Your Life Joy and Meaning Itâs a myth in our culture that we canât make good money doing what we love. However, it takes grit, determination, and courage to pursue a path that you love and to make it work for you financially. If you want more joy and meaning and financial success at the same time determine what endeavors and activities make you joyful in your life, and begin today to bringing these forward. The key is to understand 1) the essence of what you want, and then 2) find the right form of it. For instance, you might love to sing (as I do), and wonder if singing to earn money would make you happy. To find out if a new path is right for you, research, research, research â" interview people in the field, read all about the art and craft of singing professionally, take classes, find a mentor, and determine a way to âtry it onâ before you leap. You might discover that earning money singing as a full-time living isnât for you, but you love to do on a part-time or hobby basis. If t hatâs the case, join a volunteer or community singing group each week, and honor this as a heart-aligned endeavor. If you discover that you want a different line of work from your current job, create a plan that allows you to 1) research thoroughly what you want to do, 2) âtry it onâ as a volunteer or on part-time basis, then 3) commit to moving toward this new path with a solid financial plan, support of family and friends (and a coach if youâd like one), along with a step-by-step blueprint for what it will take to reinvent your career. The Ultimate Outcome â" Joy! Itâs up to you to create a career that you love, and you can do it! Start today. Let the top five reasons youâre miserable at work be the catalyst you need to change your career and change your life. Trust me on this oneâ¦when you step up to a path of building a career you love, youll expand to new heights you never thought possible.

5 secrets to manage change at work - Hallie Crawford
5 secrets to manage change at work One of the toughest things about change in the workplace is there is a lot of resistance to it. Resistance is all about not truly understanding why the change has come about. Why cant we stay in the status quo? Its helpful if leaders take the time to explain to employees the why of change and to paint the picture of how the change is going to increase revenue, improve employee satisfaction, or make things run more smoothly. If you are one of those employees who is resisting the change or a manager responsible for making change happenbelow are five tips to help yourself or others move along the spectrum of acceptance. 1. Ask for understanding. Talk with a manager or supervisor to understand the bigger picture. Discuss how the change is going to affect your job. You may find that it does not which may be a relief. If it does, then ask some probing questions: How specifically will the processes or procedures you use now be changed. What is the timeframe for the new ways to take effect. What training will be required of you. Having this knowledge will help alleviate concerns. Be proactive, dont listen to the gossip going around the company of how bad this is going to be. Straight answers from your manager or supervisor are the best. 2. Focus on what you are gaining, not what you are losing. In times of change, everyone focuses on what they are losing. Often, change can be a welcome job enhancer by moving out of a comfort zone and into a stretch zone. It could also use talent that plays to your strengths. New work relationships may result if there is restructuring going on. So, reframe a perceived loss by asking what am I gaining? 3. Be patient with yourself. Learning anything new takes time. You may find yourself working crazy hours because there is a steep learning curve. But, in six weeks time it will become the new normal. Cut yourself some slack! 4. Be an advocate for the change. Those around you will be struggling with resistance. Misery loves company. Stay out of the complaining and whining that others do. Help colleagues to understand the big picture. Step out and be a leader yourself in helping make the change happen. 5. Take care of yourself. Change is stressful and it takes a toll on the body. This is the time to hit the gym, take a walk, meditate, reflect, eat healthy. Taking care of the body, helps the brain to also chill out. The old saying goes, change is inevitable, growth is optional. So true. Change can be viewed as an opportunity to reach a higher potential. Growth always includes some kind of change and learning. So, take the time to understand, focus on the gain, be patient, be an advocate and take care of self. Change is always around the corner go with the flow! and Katie Weiser Atlanta Career Coaches P.S. How to Choose the Best Resume Writing Services
How to Choose the Best Resume Writing ServicesFinding the best resume writing services is a competitive market, and if you want to succeed, you need to consider a few things. The reason is simple: you want to present yourself in the best possible light. This means that in order to get the job you want, you need to get the right resume, not the one the HR department thinks is the best. The first tip is to ask the resume writer for an example of their work. You don't want to be writing about your own life, because that will scare your interviewer off. You want to be able to express the type of experience you are seeking, and if possible, demonstrate how this experience would match your requirements. This shows the hiring manager that you are going to be an asset to the company, and they won't be able to ignore you.Another tip is to make sure the resume is searchable online. Having this part done ahead of time will let you know which services have been recommended by your prospective emp loyer. The site should provide your information in a good, clear format, and offer you a brief demonstration of the type of resume they would be looking for. Most sites should be able to provide you with a resume sample that should give you an idea of what to expect or help you write your own if you have a limited idea of what you want.First impressions are important, and your potential employer will make this the first impression he or she gets when he or she reads your resume. A great way to begin this impression is to leave it short. It would be irresponsible to state something in a job application that was not truly your idea. If you do leave it too long, your potential employer will look at it as an attempt to sell yourself, rather than something that tell the truth about your skills and experience. If you are seeking help for creating your resume, and you have the time, go online and seek out a few resources. Once you have read some resumes and seen how they are written, take s ome time to let your potential employer get to know you a little. They will probably notice some personality traits that you may not have noticed in your resume. The best resume writing services are those that tailor their services to the employer. This means that they will customize your resume so that you can best suit your particular employment situation. They may offer a different style or approach than you are accustomed to. They will create your resume to match the other aspects of your career. This may include working within an organization or industry, which may be something your previous employer didn't consider. Finally, if you want to get the most out of your resume, make sure you test your skills with an interview before you begin writing it. Make sure you can state the details of your experience, and if possible show examples of the type of resume they would be looking for. After you have received an interview, check to see if you will be accepted for the position.

Most Noticeable Writing an Objective Resume
Most Noticeable Writing an Objective Resume But What About Writing an Objective Resume? A simple resume template is going to be your very best bet. No matter your degree of job knowledge, your resume structure is crucial to making your program stick out. When you're asking for work, you aren't the only applicant with the best resume format out there. When you're considering how to format your resume for an authentic live reader, concentrate on making the document attractive and simple to skim. One of the risks of a resume objective is that it is possible to focus too much on what you would like in your career, and not enough on how you'll add value to the organization. A resume objective might also incorporate where you are, and where you would like to go in your career. So, career objectives can be anything which they want to make sure that you are the suitable candidate. A perfect career objective isn't just about what you want to accomplish. The Meaning of Writing an O bjective Resume So for each field you're trying for, you need to have a totally separate resume. You're wondering in the event that you should have a statement at the very top of your resume to grab the hiring manager's interest. A resume objective that could apply to anybody or any kind of job isn't useful. Therefore, if you're on the lookout for a new job, it is crucial that your resume stands from the crowd to guarantee you a spot on the shortlist. In most instances, a resume objective is merely a couple of sentences long. If you should have an objective, make certain it's the perfect one. In the end, stating an objective is optional, but it might help convince employers that you understand what you want and know about the business. At times, an objective on resume can lessen the odds of succeeding.
